LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Office of Sports Information Sports Release March 29, 2008 LMU Upsets 18th Ranked Lady Eagles HARROGATE, TN -- The Lincoln Memorial University softball team beat eighteenth-ranked Carson-Newman 5-2 in the first game and lost game two 4-2 in a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon. Game #1 – Lincoln Memorial 5, Carson-Newman 2 Amanda Wampler (Powell, TN) pitched a complete game and improved her season record to 10-4 with the 5-2 win. The senior held the Lady Eagles to only three hits for the game. Offensively, LMU was led by catcher Devin Sponseller (Delaware, OH) who went 2-for-3 at the plate. Carson-Newman got on the board first in the top of the third when Whitney Kee hit an RBI single up the middle. The Lady Railsplitters answered back in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff triple by freshman Ashley Knight (Palm Harbor, FL). Alicia MacIntyre (Muncie, IN) then bunted a single to the pitcher and beat the throw, allowing Knight to score. Sammy Jo Garrett (Wartburg, TN) then reached base on an attempted sacrifice bunt that the third base player threw past second base whilst trying to get MacIntyre out on the play. Garrett and MacIntyre then advanced one base on a successful sacrifice bunt by Jackie Adams (Columbus, OH). Wampler then came to the plate and had a full count against her when Lady Eagle pitcher Zoe Heim, the reigning South Atlantic Conference Pitcher of the Week, was called for an illegal pitch which put Wampler on base with ball four and scored MacIntyre. After walking Sara Henn (Kettering, OH) to load the bases, Alisa Burk (Blaine, WA) hit a two RBI single up the middle to put LMU up 4-1. LMU would score another run in the fourth off a single by Adams. Carson-Newman picked up their final run in the fifth inning when Jessie Kuhlman drove in Leah Price with a single up the middle. Heim drops her season record to 18-5 and gave up six hits in the loss. Game #2 – Carson-Newman 4, Lincoln Memorial 2 Both teams had seven hits but Carson-Newman put two more runners across the plate and came away with the 4-2 win in game two of the afternoon. Kee got things going for C-N in the second inning as she hit an RBI single through the right side. The Lady Eagles wpuld score again in the third inning as Whitney Hickam hit a leadoff home run over the center field wall. Hickam went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead C-N in the game. The Lady Railsplitters would answer back in the bottom of the fourth when freshman Nakeshia Boggs (Nickelsville, VA) scored from third as the third baseman attempted to throw out MacIntyre at first but made a throwing error on the play. MacIntyre would later score herself off a single to left center by Garrett. An Amber Palmer single down the left field line in the top of the fifth scored Price from third and put Carson-Newman ahead 3-2. Carson-Newman would score their final run of the game in the top of the sixth inning as a throw for an attempted force-out at home went wide and allowed Jessie Howard to score. Stephanie Templeton (12-1) picks up the win for the Lady Eagles, who improve to 30-6 on the season and 6-2 in SAC contests. Henn picks up the loss for LMU (26-11, 4-4 SAC) and drops her season record to 8-5. LMU will start a four game road swing at the University of the Cumberlands on Mar. 31 and will then face Mars Hill on April 2 in an important SAC doubleheader.
