LMU Softball Team Falls in Double-Header to Mars Hill

HARROGATE, TN – The Lady Railsplitter softball team fell to 3-6 following Wednesday afternoon’s double-header loss to Mars Hill College at home on the Dorothy Neely Field.  The LMU women were defeated 2-1 in the opening game of the afternoon while falling 6-5 in ten innings of play in game two.

Despite out hitting the Lions in both games, the Lady Railsplitters dropped their home openers and their first home meeting of the year with a future South Atlantic Conference opponent.  Earlier in the season the Lady Splitters defeated Newberry College of the South Atlantic Conference on the road 6-4 and 7-3 for their first two wins of the year.

Brittney Walker (Ooltewah, TN) suffered her first loss of the year in Wednesday’s first loss to Mars Hill, falling to 1-1.  Walker pitched the entire seven innings, giving up four hits, two runs and two earned runs while striking out 10 Lions batters.

LMU’s only run of the game came in the bottom of the seventh inning when senior Cassey Schutte (Springfield, OH) went out of the yard over the leftfield fence to give the Lady Railsplitters a glimmer of hope.  The comeback fell short however, and the LMU dropped the first game 2-1.

Although Lincoln Memorial also lost game-two, offensively the game was highlighted by Schutte going two for two at the plate and freshman Sara Henn (Kettering, OH) going three for five with both runs batted in.

LMU junior Kelly Click (Ashland, OH) also fell to 1-1 with Wednesday’s loss.  Click pitched 9.1 innings of work, giving up seven hits, six runs and three earned runs while walking 3 batters and striking out 10.  Teammate Jessica Stewart (Loudon, TN) pitched the remainder of the game, allowing two hits and no damage en route to LMU’s sixth loss of the year.

This weekend Lincoln Memorial travels to Greenwood, South Carolina where they will participate in the Lander University Tournament.  LMU will play Lander University and Erskine College for a total of four games this weekend.  The Lady Railsplitters next home series will be March 8 when they play host to Alderson Broaddus College.
