LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Office of Sports Information Sports Release April 30, 2006 Lady Railsplitters End Season with Sweep of UWA HARROGATE, TN – The Lady Railsplitter softball team ended the 2006 season Sunday afternoon by completing a four-game series sweep over the Lady Tigers of the University of West Alabama. After defeating the UWA women on Saturday 10-2 and 4-0, the Lady Railsplitters came back again Sunday to pound out two run rule victories over the Lady Tigers by winning 9-0 and 11-1. Brittney Walker (Ooltewah, TN) capped off another successful year for Lincoln Memorial by getting the win in Sunday’s first game. Walker improved to 21-9 overall by pitching a five inning shutout in which she allowed only one West Alabama hit, while walking one batter and striking out four. LMU sophomore Alisa Burk (Blaine, WA) knocked the cover off the ball in the first game, going three for three at the plate with two homeruns and four RBI. Freshman Chelsie McNew (Knoxville, TN) also made a strong showing, going two for three at the plate with her ninth homerun of the year and four RBI. Many Lady Railsplitter players had good outings in the final game of the day, but it was LMU seniors Danielle Sowders (Knoxville, TN) and Kristin Hutchison (Benicia, CA) that shined in the final performance of their collegiate careers. Sowders was a perfect four for four at the plate with three runs scored, while Hutchison finished two for four with six RBI and a game-ending homerun to run rule the Lady Tigers and end the year. In the circle, LMU’s Kelly Click (Ashland, OH) grabbed her second win of the weekend to improve to 7-9 on the year by holding UWA to only one earned run on two hits, with one walk and five strikeouts over four innings of work. Teammate Jessica Stewart (Loudon, TN) closed the door on the Lady Tigers by pitching the fifth inning and allowing no damage before Hutchison’s game ending homerun in the bottom of the fifth. The Lady Railsplitters end the year and their era in the Gulf South Conference with a respectable 37-27 overall record and a 13-19 conference mark. Next season the LMU women will be competing in the South Atlantic Conference, a league they will officially become a member of on June 1, 2006. They will join Carson-Newman College, Tusculum College, Mars Hill College, Catawba College, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Newberry College, Presbyterian College and Wingate University as league members.-LMU- For additional comments please contact, Head Coach: Dan Burns Phone: (423) 869-6242 |
