OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release February 7, 2006 Lady Railsplitters Defang the Cobras HARROGATE, TN – The Lincoln Memorial University softball team kicked off the 2006 schedule Tuesday afternoon by sweeping a double header from visiting Virginia Intermont College 9-0 and 5-1 to move to 2-0 on the year. The Lady Railsplitters needed only four and a half innings in the first game of the double header to run rule the Cobras 9-0. Junior All-GSC pitcher Brittney Walker (Chattanooga, TN) recorded her first win of the year, pitching four innings, giving up only one hit, no runs, walking one batter and fanning six. LMU sophomore Kelly Click (Ashland, OH) shut the door by pitching the final inning of play and giving up only one hit. At the plate the Lady Splitters put on a solid performance by recording 10 hits in the first game of the day. Again it was Walker that set the tone of the game and emerged three for three with two runs scored and two RBI. Senior Danielle Sowders (Knoxville, TN) had a strong showing as well by going two for three with two runs batted in., while teammate Alisa Burk (Blaine, WA) finished two for three with one RBI. Other LMU players recording RBI in the first game were Tiffany Evans (Bowling Green, KY), Chelsie McNew (Knoxville, TN) and Amanda Wampler (Powell, TN) who all knocked in one run each. While game-two prove to be much closer during the early innings, again it was the Lady Railsplitters that pulled away for the win. Lincoln Memorial picked up two runs in the bottom of the fourth, and the final three runs in the bottom of the sixth for the final 5-1 margin. Sophomore hurler Jessica Stewart (Loudon, TN) moved to 1-0 on the year by going the full seven innings. Stewart threw a three-hitter, allowing only one run and no earned runs, while walking only one batter and striking out eight. This time Evans led the attack at the plate by going two for three and blasting her first homerun of the year while recording two RBI. Burk also knocked in two runs while McNew was responsible for the other. This weekend the LMU women will get a bench mark of where they are in terms of the stiff NCAA Division II competition they will face over the next few weeks. On Saturday the Lady Railsplitters will travel to Chattanooga to play NCAA Division I UT-Chattanooga in a double header that is set to get underway at 2:00 p.m. LMU won’t play another home game until they host Mars Hill College on February 16.
