LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release August 24, 2006 Lady Railsplitters Use Second Half to Break Union Harrogate, TN – Although they only led by a margin of 2-0 at the end of the first half, the Lady Railsplitters scored three goals in less than three minutes in the second period to send the Lady Bulldogs home with their first loss of the season, while moving their personal record to 1-0 on the year. (Box score) Shots didn’t seem to be a problem for the LMU women in the first half, however finding the back of the net proved to be another story. The Lady Splitters recorded 11 shots on goal in the first 45 minutes of play, but were able to score only twice. The first goal of the game came at the 25:32 mark when freshman Sarah Harvey (Daventry, England) used a Juliana Povoa (Brasilia, Brazil), Heloisa de Oliveira (Campinas, Brazil) pass to make it 1-0 Lady Railsplitters. Povoa produced more offense a short time later when she scored only minutes before the half on teammate Camilla Verissimo’s (Brasilia, Brazil) pass to give LMU the 2-0 cushion going into the intermission. As the second half got underway, it was clear the Lady Bulldogs were tired and running out of gas. The Lady Railsplitters exploited the factor and put on a push that saw them score their third, fourth and final goals at the 56:38 mark, again at 57:27, and at 58:48 to complete the final 5-0 margin. Junior Patty Spielman (Melbourne, Florida) scored first with help from de Oliveira. Not to be outdone, last year’s leading scorer, Danielle dos Santos notched her first goal of the year on another assist from Povoa and Oliveira. Then, Povoa finished off the UC women when she was again aided by Oliveira. Now boasting a record of 1-0, the Lady Railsplitters will travel to Highland Heights, Kentucky this Sunday to take on Salem International in the Northern Kentucky University Classic. The LMU women won’t return home again until they play host to nearby rival Carson-Newman College on September 6.
