LMU Women Lose To Newberry In Second Overtime

HARROGATE, TN – Saturday afternoon’s 1-0 loss to Newberry College in double overtime was a heartbreaker for the Lady Railsplitter soccer team which battled with the Indians more than 106 minutes of scoreless play before finally falling 1-0.

To say the match was a defensive struggle would be somewhat of an understatement.  The two teams combined for only 25 total shots, only nine of which were shots on goal.  LMU goalkeeper Courtney Hollis (Fort Myers, FL) recorded four saves before Newberry’s Amberley Fowler scored on a header from teammate Inga Woiwode’s free kick in the second overtime to come away with the win.

Indians keeper Danielle Beckerle played 102 minutes and 20 seconds of the match before a collision with LMU freshman Becky Thompson (Frederick, Maryland) in the second overtime earned her a trip to the bench.  Teammate Megan Hrenchir then entered and the remaining 3:47 of the match.

The loss drops the Lady Railsplitters to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the South Atlantic Conference, while the Indians move to 1-1-3 on the year and 1-0 in league play.  The Lady Splitters' next match will be toward the end of the week when they travel to Columbus, Georgia to take on Columbus State University at 5:00 p.m.  The LMU women will then travel Carrollton, Georgia to take on West Georgia next Sunday.
