3rd Ranked Carson-Newman Too Much For Lady Railsplitters

HARROGATE, TNOn Wednesday afternoon, the Lincoln Memorial University Lady Railsplitter soccer team got yet another taste of what life in the South Atlantic Conference will be like.  LMU was upended by the 3rd nationally ranked Lady Eagles of Carson-Newman 5-2, dropping the Lady Splitters to 3-2 on the year. (Box score)

Meeting for the first time since 2004, the Lady Eagles wasted little time getting on the scoreboard and showed exactly why they are one of the nation’s top ranked teams.  Carson-Newman’s Brittany Moore found the back of the net at the 10:16 mark with help from teammate Erica Stegner to give the Lady Eagles the 1-0 advantage.

After a defensive struggle that lasted nearly the remainder of the half, LMU got on the scoreboard at 44:39 to even the match.  The goal came only 21 seconds before the end of the half when the Lady Railsplitter’s pressure got to Carson-Newman and a ricochet ball trickled in the goal to tie the game at 1-1.  LMU’s Sarah Harvey (Daventry, England) was credited with the goal.

As the second half got underway, again it was Carson-Newman that struck first blood, this time when Zarmena Kasparites scored unassisted at the 58:10 mark to put the Lady Eagles on top again.

Carson-Newman added to their lead and took a commanding 3-1 advantage only a few minutes later when Rebecca Angus scored the first of her three goals on the afternoon at 71:38.

With their back now against the wall and the clock working against them, the Lady Railsplitters managed to strike pay dirt in the eighty-second minute when Danielle Dos Santos (Campinas, Brazil) used teammate Heloisa de Oliveira’s (Campinas, Brazil) assist to cut the margin to 3-2 in favor of the Lady Eagles.

Now leading by only a goal, the #3 ranked Lady Eagles weren’t about to let LMU get back into the thick of the fight late in the match.  Carson-Newman’s Rebecca Angus broke LMU’s spirit by scoring back-to-back goals at 84:52 unassisted, and again at 87:07 with help from teammate Lindsay Farris to give CN the final 5-2 margin.

Carson-Newman advances to 4-0 on the year while LMU falls to 3-2.  The Lady Railsplitters will be in action again this Saturday when they travel to Newberry College, while Carson-Newman plays host to USC-Upstate this Saturday.
