Columbus State Blanks Lady Railsplitters

HARROGATE, TN – The once beaten Cougars of Columbus State University made the trek up from Georgia on Sunday afternoon and handed the Lincoln Memorial University women’s soccer team its second shutout of the year in a convincing 3-0 decision. (Box score)

CSU scored its first goal of the match at the 22:42 mark when forward Hannah Ospina scored unassisted to give the Cougars the 1-0 advantage.  Following Ospina’s goal, the two teams battled through a defensive struggle for the remainder of the half and CSU took the 1-0 lead into the intermission.

As the second half got underway, LMU took the early offensive only to see the Cougars put together a breakaway that allowed forward Rachel Walthall to score CSU’s second goal at 60:31with help from teammate Lindsey Morgan.

Leading 2-0, the Cougars wasted little time in breaking the Lady Railsplitter’s back.  Columbus State’s Gina Goforth had been in the game less then two minutes when she was hit with a pass from teammate Kassy Boivin and slammed it into the back of the net at the 62:40 mark for the final 3-0 margin.

The loss drops the Lady Railsplitters to 4-4 on the year with a road match next Saturday at Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina.  The LMU women won’t play another home match until September 27 when they host Spalding University.
