No. 24 Tusculum Women Rally 3-2 Win Over LMU
GREENEVILLE, TN --- The No. 24 Tusculum College women's soccer team rallied with three unanswered goals as the Pioneers defeated in-state foe Lincoln Memorial University 3-2 Wednesday afternoon at Pioneer Field. (Box score) Senior Becky Carreiro (Mississauga, Ontario) recorded a pair of second half goals, including the match-winner in the 80th minute as Tusculum improves to 2-0 on the season. Lincoln Memorial was led by the stellar effort of junior Heloisa de Oliveira (Campinas, Brazil) who accounted for a goal and an assist as the Lady Railsplitters fall to 2-1 on the year. LMU drew first blood three minutes into the match when de Oliveira blasted a shot into the right corner of the net on a free kick from 28 yards out. The Lady Railsplitters found the back of the net again six minutes later when Danielle Dos Santos (Campinas, Brazil) knocked in a crossing pass from de Oliveira to go up 2-0. The Pioneers held possession most of the opening period, out-shooting the visitors 16-9, but LMU keeper Stephanie Kwoka (Johnson City, TN) kept TC at bay making five saves. TC got on the board in the 41st minute on senior Amanda Linville's (Cynthiana, KY) goal on a pass from senior Lindsey Burbank (Hyrum, UT) to cut the deficit in half at 2-1 heading into intermission. Carreiro posted the equalizer at the 49:38 mark on a blast to the top shelf of the net from 20 yards. She added her second goal of the day on a 20-yard shot to the right corner at 79:47 to put the Pioneers ahead for good. Tusculum keeper Whitney Wardrop (Calgary, Alberta) picked up the win as she went the distance and recorded eight saves. Kwoka suffers her first loss of the year as she allowed three goals, while stopping nine shots on frame. Tusculum will be in action this weekend for a pair of games in Florida. The Pioneers will face No. 18 Barry University on Friday for a 4:30 p.m. match. LMU returns to the pitch on Friday when it travels to USC Upstate for a 5 p.m. contest.
