LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release April 22, 2008 Oliveira, Spielman & Longworth Recognized At LMU Athletics Banquet HARROGATE, TN – On the heel of their third NCAA Division II Women’s Regional Soccer Tournament appearance in the past four years, Lincoln Memorial University soccer Head Coach Helio D’Anna recognized seniors Heloisa de Oliveira (Campinas, Brazil) and Patty Spielman (Melbourne, FL) and sophomore Erin Longworth (Corunna, Ontario, Canada) at Tuesday night’s annual Athletics Banquet on the LMU campus. Named Co-MVP Tuesday night was Lady Railsplitter senior Heloisa de Oliveira. Throughout her four seasons of play with the Lady Railsplitters, de Oliveira has virtually rewritten the LMU women’s soccer record book. Last season she scored a season-high 28 goals while handing out a team-best 11 assists. The four-year starter was named 2007 All-SAC First Team, 2007 SAC Player of the Year, 2007 First Team Daktronics All-Region, 2007 Daktronics Region Player of the Year and 2007 Daktronics NCAA Division II First Team All-American. Also named Co-MVP was senior Patty Spielman. Another four-year starter for the Lady Railsplitters, Spielman could be looked at as the glue that has held the LMU women together the past four seasons. During the 2007 season, Spielman scored five goals and handed out six assists for a total of 16 points from her midfield position. Her efforts helped the Lady Railsplitters capture the 2007 SAC Regular Season title, the 2007 SAC Tournament Championship and a first round victory in the 2007 NCAA Southeast Region Tournament. The recipient of the Most Improved award went to Lady Railsplitter sophomore Erin Longworth. Although Longworth only played in eight games last season for the Lady Railsplitters, her contributions on the field and in practice were monumental to the Lady Railsplitters' success. Next season she will return for her junior year and will battle for playing time at the defender position. The 2007 Lady Railsplitters finished the season with a 15-5-1 record and lose five seniors to graduation. This team’s accomplishment however will forever be remembered and are another stone in the foundation of the Lady Railsplitters' legacy.-LMU- For additional comments please contact, |
