Kiwi And Brazilian To Join The Lady Railsplitters

Hannah McEwan

Denise de Resende

HARROGATE, TN – Two players coming from different extremes of the globe will meet at Lincoln Memorial University this fall to play soccer.  Denise de Resende, from Taguatinga, Brazil and Hannah McEwan, from New Zealand will become teammates in the fall of 2007.

A 5’8” goalkeeper, de Resende joins LMU from the same area as current Lady Railsplitters Camilla Verissimo and Juliana Povoa.  As has been the case with Verissimo and Povoa, de Resende had a rich soccer experience, in “futsal” (the international version of indoor soccer).  Her accolades include finishing first through fourth place in tournaments of expression in Brazil such as the Brazil Cup (2005 and 2006), and the Brasilia City League (2002 to 2005).  As a transfer student, de Resende will pursue communications as her major.

The daughter of Jose Marques and Nadir Correia, Denise received high praises from LMU Head Coach Helio D’Anna.  “Denise will join existing keeper Courtney Hollis in filling some big shoes.  Stephanie Kwoka graduates after posting a stellar career at LMU and will be missed greatly.  Denise has tremendous reflexes and athleticism and we are very happy to have her at LMU.”

Also moving to Harrogate as a transfer from Cochise College in Arizona is Hannah McEwan.  A 5’8” defender/midfielder, McEwan is originally from Nelson, New Zealand.  At Cochise, she was a captain and helped the team to a second place finish in the ACCAC. That was a special accomplishment given that the team had a roster full of freshmen and only two sophomores.  Her Coach Chris Bermingham considers Hannah a “leader on the field, in the locker room, and in the classroom.”  In 2005 McEwan also represented New Zealand in the World University Games.

McEwan is the daughter of Dave McEwan and Linda Linda McDougall and will pursue kinesiology at LMU.  “Hannah is a strong physical player with finesse as well,” stated Coach D’Anna.  “Defensively, she will handle strong opponents and will distribute with precision from the back.  She will be great for us.”

The fall season promises to be an exciting one for the Lady Railsplitters.  It all starts on August 25th at home when LMU plays host to Pfeiffer College.
