LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release October 22, 2006 LMU Women’s Soccer Team Gives Seniors One for the Road HARROGATE, TN – Playing in the final match of the season, the Lincoln Memorial University women’s soccer team sent it’s seniors out on a winning note Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 win over visiting Wingate University. (Box score)
The Lady Railsplitters took control midway through the first half when sophomore Juliana Povoa (Brasilia, Brazil) used teammate Camilla Verissimo’s (Brasilia, Brazil) pass to send a shot off the left post and into the back of the net for a 1-0 Lady Railsplitter lead.
A short time later, LMU freshman Sarah Harvey (Daventry, England) entered the game and collaborated with fellow freshman Catalina Varsalona (Miami, FL) to give the Lady Splitters a 2-0 advantage only minutes before the half. Harvey’s score came from the left side on a long pass from Varsalona.
After taking the 2-0 advantage into the intermission, the Lincoln Memorial women held Wingate at bay until the 59th minute when the Bulldogs Elizabeth Moore took teammate Lisa Service’s corner kick and punched it in to cut the LMU lead to only one. Despite numerous attempts by the Bulldogs to notch an equalizer, the Lady Railsplitter defense held and Lincoln Memorial eventually came away with the 2-1 victory.
The Lady Railsplitters end their season at 9-6-1, while it’s on to the South Atlantic Conference Tournament for Wingate University. The LMU women weren’t eligible for this year’s conference tournament, having made the transition from the Gulf South Conference to the SAC on July 1, 2006. LMU will be eligible for conference play in fall of 2007.
