Lincoln Memorial Steamrolls Milligan In Women’s Soccer

HARROGATE, TN – From the opening touch of the game, the Lincoln Memorial University women’s soccer team bombarded the Buffaloes of Milligan College with a barrage of shots-on-goal Friday afternoon in LMU’s 10-0 win on the Les Gibbs Field.

Playing in front of students, faculty, staff and alumni on the first full day of 2007 homecoming, the Lady Railsplitters wasted no time in getting the fans involved in the celebration as Lincoln Memorial women pressured Milligan into an own-goal in only the fifth minute of the match.  The miscue set a tone that plagued the Buffaloes for the remaining 85 minutes of the match.

LMU carried a 4-0 lead into the intermission on goals by Heloisa de Oliveira (Campinas, Brazil) who was assisted by Becky Thompson (Frederick, MD), Karina Campos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) who was assisted by Camilla Verissimo (Brasilia, Brazil) and Oliveira and Becky Thompson who scored on a pass from freshman Amanda Moran (Springfield, OH).  The huge deficit clearly took the life out of the Milligan attack and LMU was able to play its entire squad.

As the second half got underway, it took less than fve minute for the Lady Railsplitters to begin their bombardment again.  Oliveira scored the second her three goals on the afternoon only 3:31 into the second half on an assist from senior Patty Spielman (Melbourne, FL) and suddenly LMU was on top 5-0.  Less than two minutes later, Thompson scored her second goals of the day in when Verissimo chipped a pass that was driven into the bottom back corner of the net to give the Lady Splitters a commanding 6-0 lead.

With a little under 40 minutes still remaining in the match, LMU’s relentless attack had taken its toll on the Buffaloes.  If Milligan still had any fire left in them, it was dashed when Lady Railsplitter midfielder Juliana Povoa (Brasilia, Brazil) caught another Verissimo pass to score her first of two goals on the afternoon.  Now leading 7-0, LMU Head Coach Helio D’Anna continued to substitute but the hungry LMU players didn’t let up.  In the sixty-ninth minute, Oliveira again hit the nylon on an assist from Lea Cataggio (Aberdeen, MD).  The goal was Oliveira’s 21st of the year as she continues her assault of the LMU record book.

With time winding down, LMU’s final two goals of the match came in the seventy-fourth minute when Povoa scored unassisted for her second goal of the afternoon to give the Lady Railsplitters a 9-0 lead, and Camilla Verissimo, who had assisted on three LMU goals earlier in the match, finally got rewarded by scoring her fifth goal of the year.

LMU goalkeeper Courtney Hollis (Fort Myers, FL) didn’t get much of a workout on Friday afternoon.  Hollis was only tested once in the first half, recording the save on Milligan’s only shot on goal for the match.  Denise de Resende (Taguatinga, Brazil) played the final 45 minutes with no shots-on-goal.

Now 9-3 on they year, its back to the grind of the South Atlantic Conference race for the Lady Railsplitters.  LMU has four remaining matches on the 2007 regular season schedule, two of which are at home.  Next week the LMU women travel to Jefferson City, Tennessee to take on the Lady Eagles of Carson-Newman College in what could play a key role in who takes the SAC regular season championship.  That match gets underway at 3:30 p.m. October 17 in Jefferson City.
