Overtime Win Against Presbyterian Has Lady Railsplitters Riding High

HARROGATE, TN – For the second time this season, the Lincoln Memorial University women’s soccer team needed overtime to decide one of their matches.  On Wednesday afternoon, the Lady Railsplitters traveled to Clinton, South Carolina to take on Presbyterian College and came away with a 3-2 win in the first overtime period.

Presbyterian got on the scoreboard first when Lytle Cannon used a pass from teammate Britney Horton to hit the back of the net from 25 yards out in the fourth minute.  LMU answered the call approximately eleven minutes later when forward Heloisa de Oliveira (Campinas, Brazil) received a pass from Camilla Verissimo (Brasilia, Brazil) and placed it into the top left corner of the net to even the match at 1-1 at the 15:49 mark.

The match again tied, PC’s Cannon caught a well placed ball from teammate Alicia Keel and scored on a one-v-one goal against LMU goalkeeper Courtney Hollis (Fort Myers, Florida).  The goal gave the Blue Hose a 2-1 lead that carried throughout the remainder of the first half.

As the second half got underway, both teams played in a defensive struggle until Lincoln Memorial was able to produce an equalizer goal in the seventy-third minute.  Lady Railsplitter senior Camilla Verissimo scored unassisted on a free kick and the match was again tied at 2-2.

After playing without either team scoring the go-ahead goal throughout the remainder of regulation, again it was LMU’s leading goal scorer Heloisa de Oliveira that struck pay-dirt, this time, receiving a pass from freshman Karina Campos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) to end the match at the 96:36 mark of overtime with a 3-2 win in favor of the Lady Railsplitters.

The LMU women are now 8-3 on the year as they prepare for this Friday’s non-conference bout with Milligan College.  The Lady Railsplitters have won six straight matches and will be taking on a Milligan team that will come to the Les Gibbs Field with a record of 5-6-2.  Friday’s match gets underway at 3:00 p.m.
