LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release September 9, 2006 Indians Drop 2-0 Decision to No. 19 Lincoln Memorial NEWBERRY, SC - Despite a solid performance, the Newberry College Indians were unable to pull off an upset, as they fell to the NSCAA/adidas No. 19 Lincoln Memorial University Railsplitters, 2-0, in men's soccer action on Saturday. (Box score) Lincoln Memorial's Leandro Pereira scored once in each half to earn the victory for the Railsplitters, who are now 4-0-1. Newberry (2-3-0) had its chances to score, but was unable to convert them into goals. The Indians got off 17 shots, but the five shots on frame were all stopped by LMU goalkeeper Brent Cole, who earned the shutout. Pereira's first goal of the day came in the 37th minute. Diogo Silvy whipped in a cross from the right side that found Pereira six yards out. Pereira turned and blasted the shot through the hands of Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.) to give LMU the 1-0 lead. The Railsplitters put the match away in the 90th minute, when Claudio Rico sent a through ball to Pereira on the counterattack. After running from the halfway mark, Pereira chipped the ball over substitute goalkeeper Bryan Linn (Safety Harbor, Fla.), and into the back of the net. Cole kept his sheet clean by stopping a point blank shot from Kyle Rudder (Arima, Trinidad) in the 16th minute, and stoning Linnie Darden (Hinesville, Ga.) in the 49th minute. Newberry will look to stop a three-game losing streak when the Indians host Coker College on Sunday at 3 p.m. LMU travels to Shepherdstown, W. Va. to take on the Shepherd University Rams on Friday, Sept. 15 at 4 p.m.
