LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release September 8, 2007 Railsplitters Remain Unbeaten In Conference & Region Play HARROGATE, TN – The Lincoln Memorial University Railsplitter soccer team won it’s first South Atlantic Conference match of the season Saturday afternoon, rolling over visiting Newberry College 6-1 to remain unbeaten in both conference and region play.
The Railsplitters entered the match still licking their wounds from last Sunday’s 3-0 loss to Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida. The loss gave LMU the inspiration to come out against the Indians of Newberry with a vengeance. The Railsplitters dropped four goals on Newberry in the first 45 minutes of play to take a 4-0 lead at the intermission.
Then, only minutes into the second half, LMU sophomore forward Leandro Pereira (Brasilia, Brazil) completed the hat-trick and gave LMU a 5-0 lead. The goal broke the Indians’ spirit and the match was all but over. Railsplitter Head Coach Helio D’Anna wasted no time clearing the bench and played all of his players before Lincoln Memorial finally came away with the 6-1 win over the Indians.
The Railsplitters are now 3-2 on the season but more importantly 3-0 in region play and 1-0 in conference action. The LMU men now prepare for their annual battle with east Tennessee rival Tusculum College this Wednesday. The match with the Pioneers will be played at home on the Les Gibbs Field and will get underway at 4:00 p.m.
