LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release September 6, 2006 Railsplitters Play 3rd Ranked Eagles to 1-1 Tie HARROGATE, TN – It’s been said that a tie in any sport is somewhat like kissing your sister. For the #19 nationally ranked Railsplitters however, Wednesday afternoon’s 1-1 double overtime tie with #3 ranked Carson-Newman College can’t hurt their cause much. (Box score) The match got started with a bang for Lincoln Memorial when freshman Leandro Pereira (Brasilia, Brazil) challenged the Eagles goalkeeper Jonathan Sandlin and chipped an unassisted shot into the back of the net at only the 1:34 mark. The goal gave the Railsplitters a momentum that carried throughout the entire first half and allowed LMU to go into the intermission with a 1-0 advantage. In the second half however, the tide turned somewhat and Carson-Newman seemed to be the team that took the majority of the offensive. LMU denied shot after shot and continued to break up the Eagle runs, but with 3:02 remaining the Eagles Omar Cooke scored an unassisted goal to even the match at 1-1 and taking some of the wind out of the Railsplitters sails. In the final minutes of regulation, neither LMU nor CN were able to come up with another goal and the match was sent into overtime. The first ten minute overtime period came and went and still there was no tie-breaking goal. Then, the second overtime period ticked off the clock and finally the two teams were forced to settle for the 1-1 decision. The tie could move Lincoln Memorial up in the next national poll released by the NSCAA however; it could also be equally as damaging to the Eagles. LMU will have to take care of business against Newberry to move up in the rankings, while Carson-Newman must face off against Ohio Valley University this Friday in Jefferson City. Both teams are now 3-0-1 on the year.
