Railsplitters Knock Off NCAA Division III Maryville

MARYVILLE, TN – On Saturday afternoon, the Lincoln Memorial University men’s soccer team entered their match with the Scots of Maryville College undefeated at 1-0, and looking for respect from those who vote on the NCAA Division II Top-25.

Last year the Railsplitters ended the 2005 season by winning the Gulf South Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament in Pensacola, Florida.  Despite winning the affair, the Railsplitters did not receive a bid to participate in the NCAA South Region Tournament, thus ending the year with the win in Pensacola.  This season when the NSCAA preseason rankings came out, the Railsplitters were again overlooked as one of the nation’s top-25 teams in Division II NCAA men’s soccer.

On August 25 the LMU men opened the 2006 season with a convincing 3-0 win over West Virginia Wesleyan in the Northern Kentucky University Classic.  Earlier this week, the Railsplitters' hopes of gaining the respect they have been so eagerly seeking were dashed when the Tusculum College Athletics Department made the announcement they were canceling the 2006 men’s soccer season due to “team rules violations”.  A win over Tusculum in Greeneville would have certainly drawn the attention needed to get LMU national respect since the Pioneers were ranked as a preseason top-25 team.

On Saturday the Railsplitters took on the Scots of Maryville College who were also a nationally ranked team but at a different level, the NCAA Division III.  And, just as happened last season in the GSC Championship the Railsplitters rolled up a convincing win, improving to 2-0 on the year while knocking off a ranked opponent.

On Sunday afternoon the Railsplitters will try to make it 3-0 and to extend their winning streak which dates back to October 21 of 2005 to seven matches.  While the Railsplitters won the GSC Championship match again Central Arkansas via a shootout, the match goes into the NCAA record book as a tie since the two teams were deadlocked following two overtime periods.  LMU’s match against Guilford gets underway at 11:00 a.m. Sunday in Maryville.
