LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release November 4, 2006 Shootout Propels Railsplitters into NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Elite 8
HICKORY, NC – The #16 nationally ranked Lincoln Memorial University men’s soccer team captured the NCAA Appalachian Region Championship and advanced to the Division II Men’s Soccer Elite 8 by virtue of winning a shootout following two overtime periods against #7 Lenoir-Rhyne College on Saturday. (Box score)
LMU struck first blood midway through the first half when sophomore Leonardo de Barros (Brasilia, Brazil) scored on a direct kick following a Lenoir-Rhyne foul. The Bears bounced back only minutes later on a header by Aaron Wheeler (Baltimore, MD) to tie the match at 1-1. Both teams were then scoreless through the remainder of regulation and both overtime periods which sent the match into a shootout.
In the shootout, LMU goalkeeper Brent Cole (Knoxville, TN) made the game-winning save on the fourth Lenoir-Rhyne Shot and LMU’s Felipe Nogueira (Uberaba, Brazil), Claudio Rico (Jacarei, Brazil), Pedro Canineu (Sorocaba, Brazil), de Barros and Leandro Pereira (Brasilia, Brazil) were all solid on their penalty kicks to give the Railsplitters a five goals to three edge.
Making the All-Regional Tournament Team from LMU were Green, Nogueira, Rico, Pizarro and de Barros, who was named the tournament MVP.
While the match officially goes into the NCAA record books as a 1-1 tie, Lincoln Memorial will advance to the Elite 8 as the representative from the Appalachian Region to play the winner of the SIU-Edwardsville vs. Northern Kentucky match. “This program has excelled over the past several seasons and is very deserving of this win,” said Lincoln Memorial University President Dr. Nancy Moody. “The University, its students, faculty and staff are extremely proud of what Coach D’Anna and his team have accomplished and wish them the best of luck next week.”
The Railsplitters are now 14-1-3 this season and have captured their first NCAA Men’s Soccer Regional title since the program's inception in 1987 and joining the NCAA in the early 90’s. They will play Great Lakes Region champion Northern Kentucky, who defeated SIU-Edwardsville Saturday evening. Game time and location will be announced in a few days.
