Lincoln Memorial Defeats Wingate 3-2 In Regular Season Finale

Rock Hill, SC -- Lincoln Memorial University freshman defender Becky Thompson (Frederick, Md.) scored the match-winner in the 83rd minute to give the Lady Railsplitters a 3-2 victory over Wingate University Sunday afternoon at Carlisle Field and the Manchester Meadows Soccer Complex. Wet field conditions at the WU Soccer Complex necessitated the date and venue change.

With the victory, Lincoln Memorial clinches its first SAC regular season championship in its first year of eligibility. The Lady Railsplitters are 12-4 overall and 5-2 in the SAC. Wingate is 5-10-1 overall and 1-6 in the SAC. The two teams will play again Wednesday (Oct. 31) in the first round of the Food Lion SAC tournament at LMU. Match times will be announced by the league office on Monday.

Thompson scored her eighth goal of the season on a breakaway at the 82:58 mark. Her goal capped a back-and-forth contest for the two teams. Wingate tied the game at 1-1 and 2-2, but the Bulldogs could not find the nets a third time. Wingate outshot Lincoln Memorial 15-12. The Bulldogs have played eight one-goal matches this season.

Lady Railsplitter senior forward Heloisa de Oliveira (Campinas, Brazil) scored her league-leading 25th goal of the season in the 10th minute. Wingate answered five minutes later, as freshman forward Jenni Barbett (Severn, Md.) tallied her fourth goal of the year on a nice through-pass from freshman midfielder Julie Zielinski (Erie, Pa.). The contest was tied 1-1 at intermission.

LMU freshman forward/midfielder Karina Campos (São Paulo, Brazil) converted a rebound of a de Oliveira shot into her seventh goal of the campaign in the 61st minute. Campos is fourth on the LMU team charts in goals scored.

Wingate senior midfielder Kelly Mottola (Middletown, N.Y.) picked up a loose ball from a corner kick and found the back of the nets in the 77th minute to tie the contest at 2-2. Mottola has four goals during her senior season. The Bulldogs are 7-1 overall when Mottola scores a goal.

Both goalkeepers worked hard on Sunday. Lincoln Memorial freshman Denise de Resende (Taguatinga, Brazil) had five saves. Wingate junior Kathryn Smith (Indian Trail, N.C.) notched four saves. Denise de Resende was making her first career start for Lincoln Memorial.

The 2007 Food Lion SAC women’s soccer tournament final four will be played at the same Manchester Meadows Soccer Complex. The two semi-finals will be contested on Friday, with the championship tilt slated for Sunday.
