LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release October 23, 2007 #4 LMU & Mars Hill Play to 1-1 Tie MARS HILL, NC – Tuesday night’s conference match with Mars Hill College was somewhat bitter-sweet in terms of the 2007 season. Lincoln Memorial entered the match at 5-0 in conference play and while the tie with the Lions is the Railsplitters' first blemish, the draw still earns the Railsplitters the title of Regular Season South Atlantic Conference Champions with one regular season match remaining. The championship is the LMU men’s soccer programs first regular season conference title since they were members of the Gulf South Conference in 2005.
Lincoln Memorial got on the scoreboard early in the match when senior Nelson Pizzaro (Pembroke Pines, FL) scored in the 26th minute on a blocked ball in front of the goal. The Railsplitter carried the lead into the intermission and through much of the second half until Mars Hill’s Troy Cole scored unassisted in the 77th minute on a penalty kick that even the score at 1-1.
The two teams played to a 1-1 tie throughout the remainder of regulation which took the match into overtime and eventually a second overtime but the deadlock could not be broken.
Statistically, LMU out shot Mars Hill 28 to 15, including eleven shots that were on goal. Lion goalkeeper Sean Merfeld must have seemed like an All-American to the Railsplitters, as he denied 10 LMU shots to preserve the tie. LMU goalkeeper Brent Cole (Knoxville, TN) also had an impressive outing, notching three saves in four shots on goal.
Now 13-2-1 on the year and 5-0-1 in South Atlantic Conference play, the Railsplitters have until Saturday to prepare for their regular season road finale with Wingate University in Wingate, North Carolina. Wingate enters Saturday’s match with a 14-3 record and a 4-2 conference mark.
