LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release October 20, 2007 #4 Railsplitters Take The Battle Out Of Alderson-Broaddus HARROGATE, TN – On Saturday afternoon, playing in their final regular season home match of the year, the Lincoln Memorial University men’s soccer team took another step in defense of their 2006 NCAA Appalachian Region crown. The Railsplitters added another win to this year’s unblemished region record of 9-0, bringing their overall season mark to 13-2 on the year.
The Railsplitters rolled over West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Alderson-Broaddus College 7-0, extending their winning streak to eleven games dating back to September 8, 2007.
The first half of Saturday’s match looked more like the Leandro Pereira (Brasilia, Brazil) show they anything. Pereira scored LMU’s first, third, fourth and fifth goals with help from teammates Aaron McKenna (Birmingham, England) and Leonardo de Barros (Brasilia, Brazil). Combined with teammate Guilherme Alves (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) goal in the 13th minute and senior Nelson Pizzaro’s (Pembroke Pines, FL) goal in the 44th minute, in practical terms, the match was over and LMU had a commanding 6-0 lead at the intermission.
In the second half Lincoln Memorial tacked on one more goal when defender Felipe Nogueira (Uberaba, Brazil) scored his 11th goal of the year on a penalty kick in the 74th minute.
The shutout of Alderson-Broaddus College is the Railsplitters' sixth shutout of the season and their eleventh match in fifteen outings where they have held their opponents to one goal or less. Much of Saturday’s shutout can be credited to the entire LMU defense, including LMU keepers Brent Cole (Knoxville, TN) and Patrick Riesenberg (Ft. Thomas, KY) who combined for four saves.
Now 13-2 overall and a perfect 5-0 in South Atlantic Conference play, the Railsplitters have to defeat only Mars Hill College or Wingate University in their final two regular season games to clinch the SAC regular season championship and the #1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament. First round action of the 2007 SAC Men’s Soccer Tournament will be held at the top-4 team’s home sights but the final-four of the league tournament will be held November 2-4 in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The Railsplitters travel to Mars Hill on Tuesday. -LMU- For additional comments please contact, |
