Railsplitters Survive Physical Match with Barry

HARROGATE, TN – Sunday’s match with Barry University could have been the most physical match of the season for the Railsplitters.  Lincoln Memorial and Barry University had a combined 38 fouls between them and a total of nine cards in 90 minutes of play before LMU came away with the 1-0 win to remain among the ranks of the unbeaten. (Box score)

The tenth ranked Railsplitters and former NCAA South Region foe Barry went toe to toe for the first 60 minutes of the match before Lincoln Memorial put the first and only goal of the 1-0 match on the board.

Although the total shot count was fairly even, both teams had goals nullified in the first half due to offside calls by the linesman which eventually resulted in one of the most grueling defensive struggles of the year.

When LMU broke the scoring silence at 60:37, it was sophomore Leonardo de Barros (Brasilia, Brazil) that hit the back of the net with help from teammate and countryman Leandro Pereira (Brasilia, Brazil) to give Lincoln Memorial the 1-0 advantage.

Late in the match, LMU’s Nelson Pizzaro (Pembroke Pines, FL) received his second yellow card of the game and was sent to the sideline, putting the Railsplitters a man down for the remaining seven minutes.  With only ten players on the field gave Barry a slight advantage, the LMU defense refused to break and eventually lifted the Railsplitters to their eleventh win of the year.

Now 11-0-2 overall, the Lincoln Memorial men have only one remaining home match of the season this Wednesday against Mars Hill College.  Ranked #2 in the Appalachian Region, if the Railsplitters can take care of business against the Lions and finish the regular season with wins on the road over Catawba and Alderson-Broaddus, they should be looking at their first NCAA Tournament appearance in the history of the LMU men’s soccer program.  Match time Wednesday against MHC is set for 3:00 p.m.
