LMU Soccer Teams Advance to GSC Championships

PENSACOLA, FL – The Lincoln Memorial University men’s and women’s soccer teams both advanced to the championship of the Gulf South Conference Tournament Friday afternoon by defeating their first round opponents.

The Lady Railsplitters entered the tournament as the #2 seed and knocked off the #3 seed Bears of the University of Central Arkansas 2-1 to qualify for their first Gulf South Conference Tournament Championship since 1999.

Sophomore Kristen Boujos (Whitby, Ontario) netted the first goal of the afternoon for LMU when she got help from teammate Camilla Verissimo (Brasilia, Brazil) who was taking a free kick.  Verissimo’s kick found Boujos in the box and she slammed it into the back of the net.

The game-winner for the Lady Railsplitters came only minutes later when Boujos hit freshman Danielle Dos Santos (Campinas, Brazil) and LMU’s leading scorer converted the pass into a goal for the Lady Railsplitters' fifteenth win of the year.

The Lady Railsplitters now prepare for Sunday’s championship match against #3 nationally ranked West Florida.  The LMU women will enter the match with the Lady Argonauts #23 nationally and will get underway at 11:00 p.m. Central Time.

The Lincoln Memorial University men gave up their only goal just 16 seconds into the match and held the Falcons of the University of Montevallo to only that one shot on goal while scoring twice to come away with the 2-1 win.

Sophomore Nelson Pizzaro (Pembroke Pines, Florida) scored first with help from teammate Frederico Moojen (Balneario, Brazil).  With the match tied at 1-1, LMU took the lead for good when junior Jon Williams (Memphis, Tennessee) scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

The Railsplitters will now play the University of Central Arkansas on Sunday in the Championship match that is set to get underway at 1:30 p.m. Central Time at Brasnaham Park in Pensacola, Florida.
