LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release January 6, 2006 LMU Soccer Receives National Academic Honors HARROGATE - The Lincoln Memorial University Men’s and Women’s Soccer teams continue to receive accolades for the 2005 season. Now their academic deeds are being honored. Recently, the Lady Railsplitters received the NSCAA Team Academic Award. This award goes to the teams with the highest cumulative team GPA. The LMU women this year boasted a 3.30 overall GPA. “This was one of our goals this year and I am as proud of it as any other accomplishment we had,” commented Head Coach Helio D’Anna. “Now our goal is to get both teams there as our men missed it by a slim 0.1 on the grade scale.” The Lady Railsplitters finished with a 16-3-1 overall record and a 9-1 GSC record, accumulating a GSC Tournament Championship and a second consecutive appearance in the NCAA National Tournament. Not to be outdone, the Railsplitters also honored LMU’s name in the national scholar scene. Last month, two players were named to the NSCAA/Adidas Scholar All-Region Team. This award takes in consideration a combination of excellence on and off the field. Marko Skuletic, a senior from Podgorica, Montenegro made the second team with a 3.92 cumulative GPA. Diogo Silvy, a junior from Santa Catarina, Brazil made the first team with a 3.76 cumulative GPA. He then became eligible to the NSCAA/Adidas Scholar All-American Team and that is just what he accomplished: recently, the list was announced and Silvy made Second Team All American. “Both men deserve a lot of credit and of course Diogo made us even more proud. This award is not separated by divisions, so the list encompasses NCAA I, II, and III, NAIA and NCCAA. So at the end of the day, these student/athletes were competing with thousands of players,” stated D’Anna. The Railsplitters finished the year with a 15-3-1 overall record, 6-2 in GSC and captured the GSC Tournament Title. -LMU- For additional comments please contact, |
