LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release November 9, 2005 Men’s Soccer Flexes Muscle on All-Conference Squad HARROGATE, TN – As if a conference tournament championship weren’t enough, the Lincoln Memorial University men’s soccer team dominated the recent All-Gulf South Conference Team which was released late Tuesday afternoon by the conference office in Birmingham, Alabama. For the second consecutive year, LMU’s Frederico Moojen (Balneario, Camburiu, Santa Catarina, Brazil) was named Gulf South Conference Player of the Year. The 6’1” sophomore led the nation again this season in goals scored (25), while tying the Railsplitter career goals record held exclusively by former LMU standout John Payette of the 1993-95 Railsplitters until Moojen goal on Sunday in the GSC Championship. Moojen’s recognition comes only hours after being named as the GSC Tournament’s Most Valuable Player where he led the LMU men to their first conference tournament title. Also recognized by the conference was Railsplitter freshman Leonardo de Barros (Brasilia, Brazil). de Barros was named GSC Freshman of the Year marking the second consecutive time a Lincoln Memorial player has received the honor. de Barros scored eight goals this season and handed out six assists while helping the Railsplitters finish with a 15-3-1 overall record that included the Gulf South Conference Tournament Championship. In addition he was named to the GSC All-Tournament Team on Sunday. Named as First Team All-Gulf South Conference were Moojen, de Barros, junior Diogo Silvy (Santa Catarina, Brazil) and sophomore defender Vitor Souza (Sorocaba, Brazil). Silvy earns his third All-GSC award having been named to the all-conference second team in 2003 and to the all-conference first team in 2004. The three-year starter scored four goals this year from his defensive midfielder position and contributed a team-high 10 assists while being named GSC Defender of the Week and to the GSC All-Tournament Team. Souza collects his second all-conference award after receiving All-Gulf South Conference Second Team status following the 2004 Railsplitter campaign. The 6’0” defender managed to score two goals and added one assist while starting in all 19 games for Lincoln Memorial this year. Despite the Railsplitters recent Gulf South Conference Championship win, the LMU men did not achieve their quest to reach the NCAA South Region Tournament. The Railsplitters fell short in the voting done by the regional committee to Saint Leo University, Lynn University and the University of Central Arkansas to end the year at 15-3-1. With only two seniors on this year’s squad, the LMU men will again be ranked as a championship contender in the 2006 preseason conference poll.-LMU- For additional comments please contact, |
