Silvy Earns GSC Defender of the Week
HARROGATE,
TN – Lincoln Memorial University men’s soccer defensive midfielder
Diogo Silvy has been named Gulf South Conference Defender of the Week by
the conference office in Birmingham, Alabama.
A 5’11” junior from Santa Catarina, Brazil, Silvy was
awarded the honor this week against the norm. Usually the title of defender
of the week is given a goalkeeper, however, last week in the Railsplitters'
two matches again Tusculum College and the University of Alabama-Huntsville,
Silvy not only helped the Railsplitters pick-up victories against both
teams, but also handed out four assists from his defensive midfielder
position, something that isn’t easily done.
While Silvy isn’t as involved in the scoring this
season as a year ago, the switch from center-midfielder to
defensive-midfielder has gone smoothly and with Silvy’s help the
Railsplitters have amassed a regular season record of 14-3 along with a #24
national ranking.
Although Silvy hasn’t scored the number of goals he did
last season, it hasn’t stopped the All-Gulf South Conference performer from
helping with the duties. Last week’s efforts pushed him atop the
Railsplitter leader board for assists this year with 10. Combined with his
previous two season’s assists, Silvy now ranks first all-time at LMU with 31
career assists, surpassing former Railsplitter standout and All-GSC
performer Eddie Escobar’s total of 26.
This Friday, Silvy and his Railsplitter teammates will
take on GSC foe Montevallo in the first round of the conference tournament
at 4:30 Central Time in Pensacola Florida. The last two times these teams
squared off, Montevallo emerged victorious. The winner will advance to the
GSC Championship on Sunday against the victor of the University of Central
Arkansas vs. Christian Brothers University match.
