Railsplitters Send Bulldogs to the Pound
HARROGATE, TN – It wasn’t a typical Railsplitter
offensive performance, but a win is a win and Friday afternoon the Lincoln
Memorial University men’s soccer team improved to 12-3 on the year with a
3-0 non-conference win over visiting Union College.
In spite of numerous goal opportunities in the first
half, the Railsplitters weren’t able to hit the back of the net until the
forty-fifth minute, only seconds before the first half came to a close. In
that instance, Railsplitter forward Frederico Moojen (Balneario, Camburiu,
Brazil) punched one in to give LMU a 1-0 lead with help from teammate
Nelson Pizzaro (Pembroke Pines, Florida).
Following the intermission, again LMU experienced
problems finishing their opportunities at goals, that was until freshman
Guilherme Alves (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) used teammate Jordan Green’s
(Pensacola, Florida) pass to make it a 2-0 Railsplitter lead to
basically take the bite out of the bulldogs.
With time winding down and the clock working in the
Railsplitters' favor, LMU went on the offensive again on a great run by
Vitor Souza (Sorocaba, Brazil) who unselfishly passed the ball off
inside the box to Moojen who scored the final goal of the match for the 3-0
win.
Incidentally, Moojen’s second goal of the match, which
turned out to be his twentieth of the season propelled him into second place
all-time on the LMU men’s soccer scoring list surpassing former Railsplitter
Dave Swaney (Centerville, Ohio).
With only two matches remaining on the 2005 regular
season schedule, the Railsplitters will have until Wednesday to prepare for
nationally ranked Tusculum College who will come to town ranked #15 in the
country and boasting a record of 9-3-1.
The last time these two teams met a year ago in
Greeneville, Tennessee, the match was called due to fog and ended in a tie
with no love lost between either team. Wednesday’s game with the Pioneers
is set for a 3:30 p.m. kick-off on the LMU campus.
