Canineu Family Still Represented at LMU

HARROGATE, TN – LMU Men’s Soccer Coach Helio D’Anna has had a history of success with the Canineu family in Brazil.  While at Union College, Coach D’Anna had tremendous success with Paulo Canineu Neto who was a four year star from 1999 to 2003.  Neto achieved all-region and All-American accolades from 2000 to 2002 and served Coach D’Anna as team captain.

Later in 2003, Coach D’Anna brought Paulo to serve as the assistant men’s and women’s soccer coach at Lincoln Memorial University, where he was an important reason for both programs achieving national prominence.  Now Coach D’Anna is proud to announce the signing of the successor for the same family: Pedro Canineu, of Sorocaba, Brazil will join the LMU squad in 2006.

A 5’10” midfielder, Pedro followed the youth systems of soccer for the Sao Bento Soccer Club while also playing high school at Escola Novo Mundo.  At club level, Pedro was chosen several times as an all-star for his league and won the state championship.

During his junior year in 2003, he came to the United States as an exchange student where he played for South Laurel High School, helping the team accomplish a record breaking season by winning district and region crowns, and making it to the elite eight of the state finals.  During this process, Canineu was selected as a Kentucky All-State player.

“Without a doubt Pedro will be able to represent his family’s name,” said Coach D’Anna.  “He is extremely talented, can play a number of positions, and plays with passion and dedication that will be contagious for the team.  We are delighted to add Pedro to our program at LMU.”

The son of Paulo Renato Canineu and Maria Benedita Alice Brandão Canineu, Pedro is also a talented musician and will join the LMU band.  With an impressive roster set for the 2006 season, the LMU men have realistic expectations of improving on last year’s 15-3-1 finish.  The Railsplitters open the 2006 schedule August 26, against West Virginia Wesleyan in Highland Heights, Kentucky.
