Silvy Named to Gulf South Conference Top Ten

HARROGATE, TN – Lincoln Memorial University men’s soccer player Diogo Silvy (Santa Catarina, Brazil) was recently named to the Gulf South Conference Top Ten for his efforts on and off the field.  The GSC Top-Ten consists of the top 10 athletes in the conference that are the most well rounded athletically, academically, and civically.

Silvy, a three year starter for the Lincoln Memorial University soccer program, made the move from center midfield to defensive midfield last season and helped the Railsplitters capture their first ever GSC Men’s Soccer Championship.

For his efforts, the junior was named First Team All-GSC and All-South Region the past two years.  A team captain for the Railsplitters, Silvy ranks sixth in career points (79), seventh in career goals (24), and is the career leader in assists (31).

According to officials at the GSC office in Birmingham, Alabama, very few student athletes can claim the combination of athletic and academic awards Silvy has received.  He earned a 3.75 GPA this year (3.85 in his Major, Business), garnering Second Team NSCAA/Adidas Scholar All-American honors.

“Diogo made us very proud,” said LMU Head Coach Helio D’Anna.  “Unlike other sports, this award is not separated by divisions, so the list encompasses NCAA Division I, II, and III, NAIA and NCCAA.  So, at the end of the day, these student-athletes were competing with thousands of players.”

In addition to the honors already mentioned, Silvy has also earned NSCAA/Adidas Scholar All-Region First Team, Academic All-GSC, Lincoln Memorial’s Gertrude Academic Scholarship in 2004 and three consecutive years on both the GSC Academic Honor Roll and LMU’s Dean’s List.

While excelling in both athletics and academics, the Santa Catarina, Brazil native served as the men’s soccer representative to LMU’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee for the past two years, assisted with International Student Orientations and was a member of the APPLE Prevention Team (where he led a committee on the issue of Attitudes and Expectations for student-athletes).

Through his athletic, academic, and civic efforts, Silvy has earned the respect and admiration of his fellow students, LMU faculty and staff, especially within the business department.  He is the definition of what the University looks for in a student-athlete both on and off the field of play.
