OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release December 7, 2007 Gibbs Stepping Down As LMU Cross Country Coach
Gibbs, a former standout runner for Lincoln Memorial University and native of Gulf Shores, Alabama, has served as the program’s Head Coach since 2003 when he returned to his alma mater following a solid collegiate career in which he earned all-conference honors and the title of LMU’s Most Valuable Runner. Throughout his five seasons as head coach, Gibbs has produced a number of all-conference athletes and has taken both the LMU men’s and women’s cross country programs to the national level. “I have sincerely enjoyed my time as coach at LMU and it is something I will always treasure,” says Gibbs. “The University is close to announcing my successor and I am proud and feel confident that I will leave the program in good hands.” The highlight of Gibbs career as head coach of the Lincoln Memorial University cross country programs came last season when he guided the women’s team to a second place finish in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament race, a second place finish in the NCAA Regional meet and to a spot in the NCAA National Championship race in Pensacola, Florida. In Gibbs final year as head coach in 2007, the LMU men’s program recorded six top-5 finishes, including a first place finish in the Lee Invitational. The women’s squad scored four top-5 finishes during the fall 2007 campaign as well. The name of Gibbs successor will officially be released on Monday. -LMU-
