OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release October 21, 2006 Lincoln Memorial men finish 3rd in first year at South Atlantic Conference Cross Country Championship Black Mountain , NC - The move from the Gulf South Conference to the South Atlantic Conference couldn't have started on a better note. This Saturday the Railsplitters made the trek from Harrogate to Black Mountain, North Carolina compete in their first South Atlantic Conference Cross Country Championship since making the move to the new league on July 1, 2006. (SAC Official Release)In all six meets this fall the Railsplitters have finished no further back in a field of teams then fifth. Until this weekend, their season had been highlighted by winning the Volunteer Cross Country Invitational on September 30 in Knoxville. In that meet, Lincoln Memorial edged out Hiwassee College, South Atlantic Conference opponents Carson-Newman andTusculum, and NAIA opponent Lee University. On Saturday the Railsplitters finished behind only SAC Champion Mars Hill College (38 pts.) and Lenoir-Rhyne (59 pts.). Lincoln Memorial placed five runners inside the top-25 finishers, including Ted Johnson (5th), Jeremy Donahue (9th), Mark Paulson (12th), Josh Armentrout (23rd) and Kyle Henderson (25th). Dwayne Stafford placed 27th, narrowly missing the field, while teammates Cameron Shelton and Peter Kurhajec finished 44th and tied for 52nd place respectively. Although the third place finish is nothing to take lightly, the Railsplitters won't rest on the win but will try to keep their succes going. That chance will come October 27th when they travel to Brevard, North Carolina for the Brevard Invitational. If Head Coach Brandon Gibbs team can make a strong showing in that event, the next step may be the NCAA Southeast Regional in Wingate, North Carolina. -LMU-
