LMU Women’s Basketball Recognizes Four At Annual Athletics Banquet

HARROGATE, TN – Lincoln Memorial University women’s basketball Head Coach Larry Just presented awards to four of his players at Tuesday night’s LMU Athletics Banquet held on the University’s campus.

Named 2007-08 Team MVP was junior point-guard Shawna Nicols (Milwaukee, WI).  This season, Nicols led the Lady Railsplitters to a 13-15 record while ending the year as the team’s third leading scorer with 10.7 points per game.  In addition, Nicols was one of the top free throw shooters on the team, hitting an impressive 85% from the free throw line.  In her first season for the Lady Railsplitters, Nicols handed out 4.53 assist per game and pulled 5.17 rebounds each outing.

The 2007-08 Coach’s award went to Lady Railsplitters Stephanie Wagner (Elkhart, IN) and Andi Winney (Yorktown, IN).  Wagner started in all 28 games this season for the Lady Railsplitters, hitting 40.5% of her shots behind the three point line and knocking down an miraculous 95.8% of her shots from the free throw line.  Wagner was 46-of-48 from the free throw line this season while averaging 9.8 points per game.  For her efforts this season, Wagner was also named to the 2007-08 South Atlantic Conference All-Freshman Team.

Also recognized with the Coach’s Award was Lady Railsplitter sophomore Andi Winney.  This season, Winney led the team in scoring, putting in 14 points per game while also leading the team in rebounding with 6.7 boards per night.  Her efforts on the floor also earned Winney a spot on the 2007-08 All-South Atlantic Conference Second Team.

The 2007-08 110% Award was presented to Lady Railsplitter freshman Brittany Craney (Petersburg, IN).  Craney, a product of Pike Central High School in Petersburg, Indiana battled a mid-season surgery to work her way into the Lady Railsplitter rotation and to become a vital part of the team’s success this season.  Craney played in 21-of-28 games this season and is arguably one of the best defenders on the team.

All four of the Tuesday night’s honorees will return for the 2008-09 season and will look to improve on last season’s eighth place league finish.
