LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release November 25, 2007 Railsplitters Survive Cobra’s Late-Game Bite To Notch First Win Of The Season
HARROGATE, TN – The Railsplitter men’s basketball team led the Cobras of Virginia Intermont College by 12 points at halftime and later extended its lead to 21 points with 14:46 to play in Sunday evening’s fourth game of the season. LMU looked as though they would run away to victory in the second half, but the Cobras struck with a late run that cut the LMU lead to only three points with 2:43 to go. Eventually, the Railsplitters survived the scare and hit their free throws down the stretch to come away with a 68-58 victory for their first win of the season. (Box score)
The physical nature of Sunday’s game actually hurt the Railsplitters. LMU’s leading scorer on the season, Terry Delaney (Murfreesboro, TN), fouled out of the game after playing only 23 minutes, as did freshman guard Ryan Whitaker (Pineville, KY). Delaney finished the game with only nine points which forced someone else to pick up the torch inside the paint. Senior Ronnie Jones (Atlanta, Georgia) answered the call and contributed 10 points and nine boards but was also in minor foul trouble with four late in the game.
On the perimeter, LMU sophomore Beau Brown (Athens, TN) was able to scrap for 15 points to lead the Railsplitters on the night offensively, while Wadner Joseph (Miami, FL) added10 points and set the benchmark for the Lincoln Memorial on the glass with 12 rebounds.
Virginia Intermont’s Akeen Price led all scorers on the night with 19 points, while teammate Derek Anderson also made double figures with 13 points on five of eight shooting from the floor.
Now 1-3 on the season, the Railsplitters will travel to Banner Elk, North Carolina on Tuesday night to take on the Bobcats of Lees-McRae College before hosting the Eagles of Carson-Newman College next Saturday in the South Atlantic Conference opener. -LMU- For additional
