Railsplitters Chop Up Lees-McRae 77-60

HARROGATE, TN The Lincoln Memorial University Railsplitter basketball team used a 23-2 run in the first half to put away Lees-McRae 77-60 on Wednesday in the season opener for both teams. (Box score)

The Railsplitters and the Bobcats were tied 6-6 early in the game until a lay-up off the fast break by junior Ronnie Jones (Atlanta, GA) gave LMU the 8-6 lead with 17:48 to go in the half.  For the next 9:24 of the game, LMU could not miss while Lees-McRae couldn't buy a shot, shooting at one point an ice-cold 18.2 percent from the field.  Toward the end of the half the Bobcats began to find their shooting touch, but still trailed 41-19 going in to the locker room.  The halftime shooting percentages tell the story as LMU hit 61.3 percent and LMC hit 23.1 percent of their shots in the first half.

The second half saw the Bobcats claw their way back into the game, pulling to within 20 points with 1:26 left in the game and outscoring LMU 41-26 in the second half.  But the damage had been done and the Railsplitters left the court with their first season-opening victory since the 2001-02 season.

Lees-McRae (0-1) was led by junior DJ Menifee (Anderson, IN) with 12 points.  The triumvirate of Stephen Haymer (Ft. Bragg, NC), Henry Williams (Kingsport, TN) and Aaron Dugger (Elizabethton, TN) led the Bobcats on the boards with six rebounds apiece.

LMU (1-0) was led by senior David Lopez (Tucson, AZ) with 17 points, also shooting 3-3 from three-point range.  Other Railsplitters in double figures were Joplin Johnson (Chicago, IL) with 11 points and Jones scored 10 points while also leading the team with eight rebounds.

LMC will next host Anderson on Nov. 21 in the CVAC opener for both teams.

The Railsplitters will next host longtime rival King College on Saturday, Nov. 18.  Tip-off is set for 3:00 pm in the Turner Arena.
