LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release February 17, 2007 LMU Survives Second Half Run to Defeat Carson-Newman in Overtime
HARROGATE, TN – The Lincoln Memorial University Railsplitters took a 18 point lead into the locker room and opened it up into a 21 points with 14:42 to go in Saturday night’s offensive showdown before the Eagles came tearing back to tie the game at 107-107. (Box score)
When neither team scored in the final few seconds of regulation, the game was sent into overtime and again the two long time rivals went toe-to-toe like two prize fighters all the way down to the final second on the clock. This time however, LMU emerged victorious and took a two-point win over the Eagles 120-118 to capture their twelfth win of the year and their sixth South Atlantic Conference victory.
LMU’s Dominique Petty (Metropolis, IN), Chris Williams (Fort Washington, MD) and Artavius Mitchell (Chicago, IL) combined for 69 Railsplitter points. Petty, playing in his first game since serving a suspension for team rules violations led the way with 24 points while Williams came off the bench to add 23 and Mitchell put in another 22 before fouling out of the game.
Also in double figures for the Railsplitters were David Lopez (Tucson, AZ) Beau Brown (Athens, TN) and Ronnie Jones (Atlanta, GA). Lopez and Brown each knocked down 15 points on the night while Jones finished with a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Leading all scorers in Saturday night’s game was Carson-Newman’s Scott Williams who turned in 32 points by games end. Also in double figures were Kente Hart (18 points), Andy Tipton (17 points), Tipton also pulled 11 rebounds to lead the Eagles, and Clay Scott (15 points).
The Railsplitters are now 12-13 on the year and 6-9 in South Atlantic Conference play heading into Tuesday night’s non-conference road match-up with North Greenville University in Tigerville, South Carolina. The Railsplitters will return home next Saturday night to take on Newberry College in the regular season finale. -LMU- For additional
