SALISBURY, NC – The Lincoln Memorial University men’s basketball suffered its sixth consecutive defeat Wednesday evening in an 89-67 loss to the Indians of Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina. (Box score)

After trading leads with Catawba throughout much of the first half, the Railsplitters went into the intermission trailing by only five, 36-31.  When the second half got underway, LMU came out running and gunning and took the lead at 16:22 on a lay up by senior Artavius Mitchell (Chicago, IL).  The game remained tied until 13:03 when the Indians stepped on the gas and extended the lead to 22 points by games end for the final 89-67 margin.

Aside from being Lincoln Memorial’s sixth straight setback, the leaves the Railsplitters' with their backs to the wall.  LMU must now win their final three games of the regular season, or go into the South Atlantic Conference Tournament with a losing record.

Now 11-13 overall and 5-9 in league play, the Railsplitters have dropped into seventh place in South Atlantic Conference play as they prepare for Carson-Newman College at home this Saturday night.  The meeting with the Eagles will be LMU’s best opportunity among the games remaining on the regular season schedule to snap the losing streak, as Carson-Newman holds a conference record of 2-10 and is in ninth place at the bottom of the South Atlantic Conference standings.

In addition to being a big rivalry match-up, the night will be marked by the reunion of the 1975-76 Railsplitter basketball team that made it all the way to the NAIA Final Four and ended the year ranked fourth in the country.  It will be the first time in 31 years the surviving members of that team and coaching staff have reunited to celebrate a performance that is to this day unequaled by any other team in LMU basketball history.  Tip-off for the game is set for 8:00 p.m.
