Railsplitters Bringing New Talent for 2006-07 Season

HARROGATE, TN – Lincoln Memorial University men’s basketball Head Coach Hugh Watson and his staff have been scouring the recruiting trail since their 7-20 finish last season.  This week Watson released the names of the new signees that will try to bring the Railsplitters back to the winning end of the floor this season.

Among the newcomers are Joplin Johnson, Chris Williams, Dominique Petty, Andrew Nickell, David Lopez, Beau Brown, Delroy Burke and Jermaine Thomas.

Johnson is a 6’9” transfer from Kentucky Wesleyan College.  A native of Chicago, Illinois, Johnson averaged 8.2 points per game and 5.8 rebounds, while shooting 46% from the field last season for the Panthers.  Johnson also played two seasons at Vincennes University prior to coming to LMU.

Chris Williams is an extremely athletic 6’6” junior from Collin County Community College in Texas where he led his team to a 31-1 record during the 2003-04 season.  Williams averaged 16.7 points per game and 8.2 rebounds, while handing out 5.7 assists.  In addition, Williams also played one year at Kent State University.

Dominique Petty is another junior college transfer from Rend Lake College in Illinois.  Originally from Metropolis, Illinois, the 6’6” Petty averaged 9.7 point per game and 7.7 rebounds last season.

From the local front comes Andrew Nickell.  A product of nearby Claiborne High School, Nickell, a 6’5” incoming freshman signed with LMU after averaging 21.1 points per game and pulling 7.6 rebounds.  He hit 80.2% from the free throw line and was voted District MVP and selected to play in the Tennessee-Georgia All-Star Game.

Lopez is a 6’4” senior that comes to Lincoln Memorial from Armstrong Atlantic State University where he played in 30 games last season averaging 5.7 points per game and hitting 46% of his shots behind the three point line.  His experience also includes two seasons at Phoenix College.

Another somewhat local product is Beau Brown.  Brown is a 6’2” freshman who signed with LMU out of McMinn Central High School.  En route to leading his team to a 35-2 record last season, Brown averaged 19.2 points per game and pulled 8.1 rebounds, while handing out 3.4 assists.  He was selected 1st Team All-State, all-district, all-region, and played in the Tennessee-Georgia All-Star Game.

Delroy Burke is a 6’5” junior that comes to LMU from Oklahoma City University.  Last season Burke helped OKCU to a 29-8 overall record which included a NAIA National Championship Runner-up finish. 

At the guard position LMU has signed Jermaine Thomas, a 5’10” junior from Lincoln Trail College in Illinois.  Last season Thomas averaged 16.7 points per game, while handing out 5.7 assists.  The Chicago, Illinois native was also selected 2nd team all-conference.

This season the Railsplitters will be competing in their first year of membership with the South Atlantic Conference.  The season opener is set for November 15, at home against Lees-McRae College.
