Pioneers Rally In Overtime To Beat LMU 87-77

GREENEVILLE, TN -- Senior Donald Sexton scored 23 points, including 10 in the overtime period to lead Tusculum College to a dramatic 87-77 overtime win over visiting Lincoln Memorial University Tuesday night in men's basketball action at Pioneer Arena. The win ends a three-game home losing streak to LMU. (Box Score)

The Pioneers (8-3) rallied from a 10-point deficit with three minutes left in regulation and Douglas Tshomba's three-pointer with two-tenths of a second left sent the game into overtime.

In the extra period, Tusculum outscored the Railsplitters by a 16-6 margin including 6-for-6 free throw shooting by Sexton and a pair of field goals. He finished the game shooting 6-for-11 from the floor and 3-for-4 from beyond the arc, including a three-pointer with 1:02 left in regulation in a 9-0 TC run down the stretch.

Chris Poore added 15 points, while Tshomba and Larry Minnefee posted 12 and 11 points, respectively.

LMU's Johnny Martin scored 20 points and pulled down eight rebounds, while Artavius Mitchell added 17 markers and nine rebounds. Renaldo Maxwell tallied 10 points and seven assists, while Kenneth Fox accounted for 10 points off the bench.

LMU out-rebounded Tusculum by a 45-37 margin, but Tusculum converted 21 points from 20 turnovers by the visitors.

The Railsplitters jumped out to a 35-28 halftime lead and increased that to a dozen (60-48) with 6:23 left following a lay-up by Fox. LMU led 68-59 following a pair of made free throws by Artavius Mitchell with 2:51 left.

Minnefee and Matt Farus recorded a pair of jumpers and Sexton drilled a three to trim the LMU lead to 68-66. TC forced a turnover and Sexton tied the game with his jumper with 33 second remaining. LMU answered with a clutch three-pointer by Maxwell with 14 seconds left. The Pioneers, who were out of timeouts, moved the ball up the floor as Tshomba worked his way around the basket and canned the tying 3-pointer in the final moments of regulation.

Tusculum will host USC Aiken on Thursday for a noon contest at Pioneer Arena. LMU is also back in action on Thursday when it hosts Mars Hill College at the Tex Turner Arena for an 8 p.m. contest.
