Eagles Roll In Win Over LMU

JEFFERSON CITY, TN -- The Carson-Newman Eagles used a combination of hot shooting and stingy defense as they rolled to an 87-63 win over the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters Saturday night at Holt Fieldhouse. (Box score)

The Eagles shot 48% (26-54) for the game which included a 54% (15-28) advantage in the second half. The C-N defense forced LMU into 30 turnovers, of which the Eagles had 15 steals. The Eagles were led in scoring by Scott Williams (Macon, Ga.) who had 21 points. Kente Hart (Evansville, Ind.) added 17 points and Darren Williams (Lawrenceville, Ga.) had 10 points. Johnny Martin (Detroit, Mich.) led LMU and all scorers with 27 points.

After LMU (1-6) took a 13-10 lead at the 13:57 mark, they went cold as they did not score again for another six minutes as the Eagles took advantage of the slump, building a 25-13 lead. The Eagles extended the score to 39-23 on a short jumper by Clay Scott (Jefferson, Ga.) right before the half.

The Railsplitters cut the lead to 44-38 on two free throws by Martin with 15:42 remaining in the game. But they would get no closer as the Eagles controlled the rest of the contest. The game was punctuated by a thunderous dunk by freshman Deonta Williams (Selma, Ala.) that brought the 1,144 fans at the game to their feet.

Carson-Newman (5-4) continues their exceptional bench play as the Eagles' reserves out-scored LMU 34-13 off the bench. C-N scored 38 points off LMU turnovers.

The Eagles host Belmont Abbey December 15 at 7 p.m. in the final game before the Christmas break.
