LMU Baseball Recognizes Three At University’s Annual Athletics Banquet

HARROGATE, TN – Lincoln Memorial University baseball Head Coach Jeff Sziksai recognized team members Casey Sedley (Miami, FL), Shane Kaufman (Miramar, FL) and Joe Horsley (Corryton, TN) at the University’s Athletics Banquet Tuesday night.

Sedley, a second year transfer to the LMU baseball program, earned MVP honors by helping the Railsplitters achieve a 30-22-1 record this season.  While playing third base, pitcher and designated hitter, the 6’4” junior hit .316 this season with 13 doubles, two triples, 13 homeruns and collected 58 RBI.  On the mound Sedley finished the year with a 5-5 record and a 3.78 ERA while finishing second on the team in strikeouts (40).

Sophomore Shane Kaufman was named the 2008 Most Improved Player.  Kaufman started in 31-of-35 games in which he played this season, hitting .298 at the plate with 10 doubles, one homerun and 13 RBI.  Kaufman is expected to return next season and will battle for a starting roll in left field.

Railsplitter red-shirt Joe Horsley was awarded the Coach’s Award.  Although Horsley never played in a game situation this season for the Railsplitters, he exemplified what LMU Head Coach Jeff Sziksai looks for in a player by helping on practice and game days with field duties, supporting his teammates on game days and in practice and assuming many other duties and responsibilities that weren’t expected of him.

The Railsplitters' 30-22-1 season finish marks the second consecutive season the Railsplitters have surpassed the 30-win mark.  With the loss of only three seniors, the Railsplitters have one of the most solid foundations of returning players in many years for 2009.
