Lincoln Memorial University men’s soccer junior Leonardo de Barros (Brasilia, Brazil) was named Male Athlete of the Year Monday night at the University’s annual Athletics Banquet held on the LMU campus.

New Faces For The Spring
Although the Railsplitters had a busy season this fall, that didn’t stop Head Coach Helio D’Anna from continuing to look ahead to the 2007-08 class.  As a result, six new players are being added to the roster this spring. They are, Jemele Juber, Jemal Talore, and Robel Moges all from Clarkston, Georgia, Hudson Pereira and Ivor Meredith, from Brazil, and Martin Benitez, from Lexington, North Carolina.

Fort Lewis’ John Cunliffe Headlines Daktronics NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer All-America Team; Lincoln Memorial University Has Two First Teamers
2006 NCAA Division II National Champion Dowling University placed four players on the first team and one on the second in leading all schools  with five players on the inaugural Daktronics NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer All-America Team.  Fort Lewis senior forward John Cunliffe is the NCAA Division II National Player of the Year.

On the heels of the University’s first NCAA Division II men’s soccer regional championship, the Lincoln Memorial University men’s soccer team received word Tuesday that four of its members had been named All-Appalachian Region.

The Railsplitters Are Goin’ to the Final-Four!

Sunday’s match between Lincoln Memorial and Northern Kentucky was to decide the final spot in this year’s NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Final-Four.  On Saturday, #3 West Florida the host institution, #1 Dowling and #2 Fort Lewis the defending national champions all qualified by defeating their opponents in their quarterfinal matches. Shootout Propels Railsplitters into NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Elite 8
The #16 nationally ranked Lincoln Memorial University men’s soccer team captured the NCAA Appalachian Region Championship and advanced to the Division II Men’s Soccer Elite 8 by virtue of winning a shootout following two overtime periods against #7 Lenoir-Rhyne College on Saturday. (Box score)

Railsplitters Earn Trip to Regional Championship & NCAA Division II Sweet 16
The night before the sixteenth ranked Lincoln Memorial men’s soccer team played ninth-ranked Carson-Newman in the semi-finals of the NCAA Appalachian Region Tournament, each player on the squad was given the opportunity to speak his mind in a player meeting.  Then each player took the remainder of the night to reflect on the season’s accomplishments and to focus on Thursday’s match.

Railsplitters Finally Get Their Due
In late October of 2005, the Lincoln Memorial University men’s soccer team traveled to Pensacola, Florida and won their first ever Gulf South Conference Tournament Championship.  Despite that win, the Railsplitters were denied a bid to the NCAA postseason tournament and were forced to end the year with a 15-3-1 record.

Senior Nathan Zuzga (Troy, MI) scored both goals in his final home match as host Catawba upset 10th-ranked Lincoln Memorial 2-1 in men’s soccer action on Friday night at Frock Field.  The Catawba Indians improve to 10-7, while the Railsplitters fall to 12-1-2. (Box score)

#10 LMU Thrashes Mars Hill in Men’s Soccer
Some may call it fate, others may call it destiny.  Whatever it is, the soccer gods continued to shine on the Lincoln Memorial University men’s soccer team Wednesday afternoon in their 9-1 thrashing of future South Atlantic Conference opponent Mars Hill College.  The win also puts the Railsplitters a step closer to their first ever NCAA Regional Tournament appearance. Railsplitters Survive Physical Match with Barry
Sunday’s match with Barry University could have been the most physical match of the season for the Railsplitters.  Lincoln Memorial and Barry University had a combined 38 fouls between them and a total of nine cards in 90 minutes of play before LMU came away with the 1-0 win to remain among the ranks of the unbeaten. Over the weekend the LMU men’s soccer team participated in a classic hosted by Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee.  Aside from defeating both nationally ranked Maryville (3-1), and Guilford College (2-0), the Railsplitters had five players named to the all-classic team.

Canineu Family Still Represented at LMU
LMU Men’s Soccer Coach Helio D’Anna has had a history of success with the Canineu family in Brazil.  While at Union College, Coach D’Anna had tremendous success with Paulo Canineu Neto who was a four year star from 1999 to 2003.  Neto achieved all-region and All-American accolades from 2000 to 2002 and served Coach D’Anna as team captain.

Silvy Named to Gulf South Conference Top Ten
Lincoln Memorial University men’s soccer player Diogo Silvy (Santa Catarina, Brazil) was recently named to the Gulf South Conference Top Ten for his efforts on and off the field.  The GSC Top-Ten consists of the top 10 athletes in the conference that are the most well rounded athletically, academically, and civically.

How Sweet it is!
Prior to Sunday’s GSC Championship matches, only two times in the history of the Gulf South Conference Soccer Tournament had one of its member institutions swept the tournament championship in men’s and women’s play.  On Sunday afternoon in Pensacola, Florida, Lincoln Memorial University became the third GSC school to do just that.

Sophomore Matt Marlin led the Central Arkansas offense with two goals in two assists in the #10 Bears' 5-0 shutout of #17 Lincoln Memorial on Sunday afternoon. With the win, UCA improves to 11-1-1 overall and takes over first place in the Gulf South Conference with a 5-0 mark. The Railsplitters fall to 11-2 and 5-2 in league play. Head coach Chad Flanders' team also improves to 4-1 against ranked opponents this season.

LMU Men’s Soccer Wins 90 Minute War with Nova Southeastern
Only one goal was scored on Sunday afternoon in LMU’s NCAA South Region opener against Nova Southeastern University.  Playing in Columbus, Georgia for the second time in less than a week, the Railsplitters knocked off the undefeated Knights 1-0 on a goal by freshman Leonardo de Barros (Brasilia, Brazil) in the twentieth minute of the match.

Matt Akins To Complete Coaching Staff
It has been an eventful summer for Head Soccer Coach Helio D’Anna.  Early this summer he received news that Assistant Soccer Coach Paulo Neto had accepted the position of Head Men’s Head Coach at Cumberland College, KY.  A two year member of the Railsplitter coaching staff, Neto has also played for Coach D’Anna for four years at Union College, KY.
