Plein Air Workshop for Young People
Debbie Routman posing with two of her students, Ari and Nora James and their recent "En Plein Air" paintings

June 17-19
with Deborah Routman

En Plein Air is a French phrase that literally means “in the open air.”  So these workshops are about painting outside. Fancy Nancy would love to paint “en plein air.”

The purpose of these workshops is to:

  • engage young people in their surroundings
  • enhance their skills of observation and expression
  • increase visual literacy
  • improve painting skills in a nurturing and noncompetitive environment
  • build self-confidence through creativity
  • and mostly to have fun!

Our goal is first and foremost for students to share in the joy of painting our extraordinary landscape, weather it is an intimate view of a pile of leaves and sticks and bugs indigenous to Claiborne, Bell and Lee Counties, or to strike brush to paper to express the majesty of our Cumberland vistas. We offer two workshops, a morning session for children ages 6-9 and an afternoon session for young people ages 10-12.

Location: The Art Studio, 703 Brooklyn St., Cumberland Gap, TN.

Cost: $10 per day OR $25 for all 3 days
Lunch is included.  All needed art supplies are provided by LMU.

Group I: Ages 6-9
10 am until noon

At the end of this workshop, students will have seen examples of works by famous artist relevant to a specific period and will have completed paintings related to that period.

Group II: Ages 10-12
1pm until 3pm

In this workshop, in a relaxed and informative outdoor setting, students will earn the basics of necessary to complete a landscape painting in acrylics, “en plein air.”
