Graduate Student Loans

In order to receive the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loans Subsidized/Unsubsidized at Lincoln Memorial University, you must be enrolled for a minimum of at least 6 credit hours (half-time) for any given semester and complete a Master Promissory Note entrance interview online with the Department of Education.

A subsidized loan is available to students who demonstrate financial need (using the FAFSA). The U.S. Department of Education pays the interest on the loan during the borrower's in-school and grace periods as well as authorized deferment periods. Effective for the 2012-2013 academic year, there will be no Subsidized Loan eligibility for students enrolled in any Graduate or Professional Programs. While students can still borrow the same annual amount, $20,500, the Unsubsidized Stafford Loan is the only option for students. The elimination of the Subsidized Stafford Loan was a cost cutting effort by the U.S. Department of Education.

Unsubsidized loans are available to students who do not qualify for a subsidized loan or for students who qualify for less than the annual loan limit. The U.S. Department of Education does not pay the interest on an unsubsidized loan. You, the borrower, are responsible for all interest during the life of the loan.

Direct Grad Plus Loans are low interest unsubsidized loans available to assist graduate students admitted and enrolled in graduate programs who have exhausted their Federal Stafford Loan eligibility. To be eligible for a Graduate Plus Loan, the borrower should have no adverse credit history. The first payment is due within 60 days of your anticipated final disbursement for the award year; however, deferred or reduced payment options may be available.

If you wish to reduce the loan amount that has been offered to you in your financial aid award package, you will need to complete a Loan Request Form and submit it to our office.
