Why Choose J. Frank White Academy

Accreditation

When evaluated for accreditation, the J. Frank White Academy received a glowing review and was labeled a "hidden jewel" by the visiting review team from Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Small School and Small Class Size

Capitalizing on small class sizes and low student-teacher ratios of about 7:1, the Academy well-prepares students for the rigors of higher education.  A small school with less than 100 students, research shows, enhances the learning experience.

Facilities

Academy students frequently access LMU facilities, including science labs, high-tech media center and library, tutoring lab, tennis courts, cafeteria, swimming pool and weight rooms, baseball field, Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum and the landmark 5,000 seat Tex Turner Arena.

Curriculum

Each student must earn a minimum of 24 credits before graduating:

•Math - 4 credits

•English - 5 credits

•Fine Arts - 2 credits

•Science - 3 credits

•Social Science - 3 credits

•Foreign Language - 2 credits

•Electives - 4 credits

Eye Opening Encounters

Colleges Classes

Included in tuition, qualifying Academy juniors and seniors can take up to 30 hours of LMU classes for dual credit or just college credit.  By taking real college classes (instead of Advance Placement (AP) courses) Academy students actually get the college experience first-hand and can potentially complete their freshman year by the time they graduate.  Students can take:

•six hours the summer after their sophomore year

•six hours during their junior year

•six hours the summer after their junior year

•six hours their senior year

•six hours the summer after their senior year.

In addition, LMU professors often teach classes at the Academy giving students exposure to college teaching in those classrooms.

Extracurricular Activities

Programs like Odyssey of the Mind - a unique problem-solving and creative performance competition - and World School - which brings Academy students together with other high school students from all over the world - are just two examples of enriching extracurricular activities.  Our Science Olympiad team returns from competition each year with several medals and we participate in the state and national Beta Club conventions.  Our students also are invited to participate in fantastic learning experiences outside the school like Tennessee's Governor's Schools.

Athletics

A member of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA), the Academy fields 10 athletic teams, including boys and girls basketball, tennis, cross country, golf and soccer, as well as baseball and cheerleading.  Several All-District and All-Region honors can be expected annually.

Results

Virtually all graduates of the Academy go on to pursue degrees at fine schools such as:

•Duke

•Wake Forest

•Emory and Henry

•University of Tennessee

•East Tennessee State University

•Middle Tennessee State University

•Tennessee Tech

•Vanderbilt

•William and Mary

•University of Virginia

•University of Kentucky

•Furman

•Virginia Tech

•Lincoln Memorial University

A high percentage of graduates also receive generous scholarships from the schools in which they enroll.  We also boast scores well above the national average on tests like the ACT, SAT and Tennessee's standardized tests such as the Gateway and the Terra Nova.  Records of comparison each year can be accessed from the school guidance office.

Community of Friends

Parent Involvement

Parents are welcome and are extremely involved in fundraising, athletics, field trips and school improvement.

Safety

Teachers and administrators at the J. Frank White Academy take every measure to ensure a safe, warm, caring community for students.  The Academy benefits from LMU's around-the-clock security and takes a proactive stance against drug use by performing random drug tests throughout the school year.

Cost

The cost of attending the Academy is kept as low as possible through aggressive fundraising efforts.  A monthly bank draft payment play is available through Lincoln Memorial University's finance office, and scholarships are available.  See more about tuition here.

Lincoln Memorial University

The Academy's parent institution is the key that makes this small private school levels above the rest.  From use of the campus facilities to the guidance from the LMU Board of Trustees, the Academy advantage abounds because of this relationship.  The vote of confidence is also evident in the high percentage of LMU faculty and staff who chose to send their own children to the Academy.  Another plus is LMU's premier education department which has been training tomorrow's educators for years with a high degree of acclaim.  Quite simply, there is nothing in the region to compare to the J. Frank White Academy.

Mission

Like our parent University, the J. Frank White Academy strives to be an "opportunity" for people of this area to improve and make a better life for themselves through education.  The goal is to prepare students for what lies ahead.
