VETERINARY MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM STANDARDS



Mission Statement of the Veterinary Medical Technology Program

In conjunction with mission statements of Lincoln Memorial University and the School of Allied Health Sciences, the faculty of the Veterinary Medical Technology Program strives to install the highest professional responsibility, moral, and ethical standards in the preparation of quality veterinary technologists (veterinary nurses) through a superior academic program at the undergraduate level. Specifically, the mission of the veterinary medical technology program is to prepare veterinary technicians with the Associates of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology that demonstrates professional competency in the veterinary field including but not limited to administer quality medical care, laboratory procedures, therapeutic procedures, promote client-technician-doctor communication, and understand humananimal bond.

Program Goals

As a member of Allied Health, the Veterinary Medical Technology
Program seeks to fulfill the following goals:

  • Provide an Associate of Applied Science and a Bachelor of
    Science Degree in Veterinary Technology that meets the
    academic standards of the American Veterinary Medical
    Association, the State of Tennessee, and Lincoln Memorial
    University
  • Provide conscientious, caring, skilled veterinary technicians
    and veterinary technologists who are highly capable of
    comprehending and practicing the science of veterinary
    medicine
  • Provide an educational background that enables graduates to
    become integral members of the veterinary health-care field.

Program Objectives

  1. Administer quality medical care involving companion, food and laboratory animals. (Advance Medical Knowledge)
  2. Demonstrate and apply laboratory procedures essential to
    diagnostic veterinary medicine. (Advance Medical Knowledge)
  3. Demonstrate understanding of disease processes and the
    subsequent therapeutic procedures. (Promote Public Health)
  4. Demonstrate therapeutic interpersonal communication skills
    in the client-technician-doctor relationship. (Service to
    Humanity)
  5. Understand the human-animal bond.(Promote Animal Welfare)
    Technical and Performance standards are necessary in a competent
    veterinary technician or technologist. These standards are necessary to
    protect the technician, other members of the health care team and the
    animal patients.
Physical Requirements
  1. Capable of lifting and/or carrying up to 50 pounds from floor to
    waist level frequently
  2. Capable of handling, positioning and restraining live animals.
  3. Visual ability to see details at a close range and to make
    observations and assessments necessary in animal care. Be able to
    use diagnostic equipment i.e. microscope, thermometer,
    refractometer etc.
  4. Willingness to assist with or perform a wide variety of routine
    medical surgical and diagnostic procedures common to the
    veterinary setting, including humane euthanasia
  5. Capacity to read, understand, and quickly execute complex verbal
    and written instructions given in English and perform
    pharmaceutical computations
