What is the purpose of human life? What is the best way to live? Is there a God?
For the last 2,500 years, thinkers in the West have wrestled with these questions.
Some of their answers entail belief in a deity. Some rely upon the power of human reason.
LMU's Philosophy and Religion program will give you the opportunity to explore the full range
of answers that have been offered.

Special Features
Faculty in the Religion and Philosophy department are experienced scholars whose work
has appeared in The Journal of Communication and Religion, Vital Speeches of the Day,
and The Journal of Popular Culture.
Courses in philosophy cover a variety of areas, ranging from contemporary issues such
as medical ethics to eternal questions about the meaning of life.
Religion courses include the history of religion, a comparative study of the major
religions of the world, and a survey of the major sacred writings of the Judeo-Christian
tradition.
You'll gain a better understanding of major world religions by visiting several different
worship services in the Knoxville area.
Course Information
Courses in this program are evenly divided between philosophy and religion. As a major,
you'll take core courses that include:

- Topics in Philosophy
- Critical Thinking
- Ethics
- Seminar in Philosophy/Religion
- Survey of the Old Testament or
- Survey of the New Testament
- World Religions
- History of Christianity or
- Religion in America
A wide selection of electives is also offered. These cover:

Minor
The minor requires 21 hours of core and elective courses.
Graduate & Professional Opportunities
As a philosophy and religion major, you're prepared for a career in religious
organizations and for advanced graduate work. In addition, this program works
well as a second major for students who want to expand their knowledge of the
humanities.
