Dr. Bill Engle | 423.869.6471 | billy.engle@lmunet.edu

Are you interested in a career in medicine? Are you self-sufficient? Precise? Thorough? As a medical technologist, you have to be. The information you provide the physician influences the medical treatment that a patient receives.

A medical technology degree will prepare you for a career as a clinical laboratory scientist performing and interpreting a wide variety of tests--from simple blood glucose checks to more complex analysis necessary for diagnosing and treating pathological states.

Degrees Offered

Bachelor of Science

Special Features

LMU's program is fully accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science and by the State of Tennessee Board of Health.

All program graduates take the national board exam, called the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathology, after having met their academic and laboratory educational requirements. Once you've passed, you may use the initials "MT (ASCP)" after your name to show you're proficient in laboratory medicine.

Required Courses

As a major, you'll be required to take the following courses:
  • Introduction to Laboratory Methods and Techniques I
  • Introduction to Laboratory Methods and Techniques II
  • Hemostasis
  • Hematology
  • Serology and Immunology
  • Immunohematology
  • Intermediate Clinical Practice I
  • Intermediate Clinical Practice II
  • Urinalysis and Body Fluid Analysis
  • Laboratory Management and Supervision
  • Clinical Chemistry I
  • Clinical Chemistry II
  • Medical Microbiology I
  • Medical Microbiology II
  • Advanced Clinical Practice I
  • Advanced Clinical Practice II
  • Senior Review
Clinical Rotations

In addition to the lecture courses, you'll gain valuable experience in clinical laboratories ranging from small rural hospitals to state-of-the-art molecular pathology facilities. Currently, the program has ten clinical affiliates located in three states. These are:
  • Baptist Health System in Knoxville, Tennessee
  • Claiborne County Hospital in New Tazewell, Tennessee
  • Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee
  • Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee
  • Lakeway Regional Hospital in Morristown, Tennessee
  • Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Virginia
  • Molecular Pathology Laboratory Network in Maryville, Tennessee
  • Morristown Hamblen Healthcare System in Morristown, Tennessee
  • Pineville Community Hospital in Pineville, Kentucky
  • St. Mary's Health System in Knoxville, Tennessee
Career Opportunities

Medical technologists are able to work in the five major areas of the clinical laboratory:
  • Immunohematology (Blood Bank)
  • Clinical Chemistry
  • Hematology
  • Immunology
  • Clinical Microbiology
This means that with a medical technology degree from LMU, you'll have a wide variety of career choices--hospitals, independent laboratories, health facilities, clinics, and commercial industry all have positions open and available for qualified medical technologists.

Currently, the national average salary for medical technologist is approximately $40,200. Experienced supervisors' and laboratory managers' average salaries range from $59,200 to $63,000.

With two years of experience in hospital settings and having completed a challenging academic degree in the health sciences, you'll also be well prepared to further your education by pursuing advanced degrees in medicine, pathology, or physician assistant studies.

Departmental Awards

The J. Kermit Bailey Award of Clinical Excellence is awarded to the senior medical technology student who has demonstrated an exceptional, caring attitude toward patients; a willingness to give of himself or herself in assisting others; and a dedication to give 110% in all endeavors.

The Louis Lutz Award of Academic Excellence is given to the senior medical technology student with the highest overall GPA at the end of the fall semester of the senior year.
