LMU's history major will teach you to be a historian and provide you with a solid foundation for
a variety of careers in teaching, historic preservation, and further study in law school and
graduate school. Even if you don't want to develop a career in a history-related field,
studying the past will give you new perspectives on the present and knowledge that is useful
for succeeding in any career.

Special Features
LMU's history faculty include specialists in the American Civil War, British imperialism, historical geography, and museum studies.
Students may choose from concentrations in the Civil War, military history, British history, Appalachia, and museum studies.
Internships are available with the Tennessee state legislature and through a study abroad program in London.
Capstone courses such as Historical Methods and Introduction to Historiography provide a careful look at how historians do their craft.
Course Information
Courses for the major include surveys of American and world history; a variety of
upper-level elective courses spanning American, European, and Asian history;
and upper-level courses on historical methodology. Some of these courses are:
- World History to 1500
- World History since 1500
- American History to 1877
- American History since 1877
- Introduction to Historiography
- Historical Methods
Minors
Along with a minor in history, we offer a minor in museum studies.
Internships
Internships will give you a firsthand look at how historians work, and provide valuable hands-on experience. Our majors have interned with:
- The Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, Lincoln Memorial University
- The Bell County Historical Society in Middlesboro
- The Tennessee state legislature
Career Opportunities
With a degree in history, you'll be prepared for careers such as:
- Teaching at the secondary school level (with a double major in history and education)
- Teaching at community colleges and four-year colleges (with additional preparation through graduate-level coursework)
- Working in research and archival positions at museums, historical societies, and national and state historical parks
Alumni Success

- Attending Graduate and Professional Programs at the University of Kentucky and the University of Tennessee
- Working as director of tourism and education at the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, Lincoln Memorial University
- Taking a lead role at LMU as the dean of students

Clubs & Organizations
The History Department sponsors the Mu Nu chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the international
honor society in history. Our chapter is quite active, with members frequently attending
or presenting papers at the national conference.
