What is "American" about America? What are the defining characteristics of American life that are distinctive to our country? What do we have in common with other nations and cultures? Using an innovative, multi-disciplinary approach to studying the history and culture of the United States, LMU's American Studies program will teach you to craft an individual understanding of American civilization.

Degree Offered

Bachelor of Arts

Special Features

Faculty in the program include professors in creative writing and early American and Appalachian literature, and a nominee for the Pulitzer Prize for History.

The major offers two capstones courses on American studies methodology and research.

Student

"American studies encourages students to think self-reflectively about our society, to think 'out of the box' and question assumptions about our culture and our mode of relating to other cultures. It's reason for existence is to be provocative."
--Dr. Earl J. Hess, Director of the American Studies Program.
