What is "American" about America? What are the defining characteristics of American life that
are distinctive to our country? What do we have in common with other nations and cultures?
Using an innovative, multi-disciplinary approach to studying the history and culture of the
United States, LMU's American Studies program will teach you to craft an individual understanding
of American civilization.

Special Features
Faculty in the program include professors in creative writing and early American and Appalachian
literature, and a nominee for the Pulitzer Prize for History.
The American Studies program allows students to concentrate on particular areas of interest,
for example, Lincoln and the Civil War era, early American culture, and Appalachian culture.
The major offers two capstones courses on American studies methodology and research.

American studies majors take courses in history, English, government, economics, and art.
These courses include:
- American Government: National
- American History since 1877
- American History to 1877
- Seminar in American Studies
- Senior Thesis
- Survey of American Literature I, II
Internships
You'll be able to take advantage of internships offered through LMU's Appalachian Development
Studies program and the Tennessee Legislative Internship program.
Career Opportunities
American studies offers career opportunities similar to those available to a history or
English major. However, the major provides an added dimension of intellectual preparation
by enhancing your ability to conceptualize across disciplinary boundaries.
Graduate & Professional Opportunities
As a major in American studies, you'll be prepared for further study in law school or
graduate programs in history, English, government, sociology, and art.
